Morello hydraulic upenders and die tilters
Upenders that turn dies, coils, molds and castings by 90°, 180° or 360° with smooth, controlled motion. No crane flipping, from 1 t to over 200 t (440,900 lb).
Key features
Why plants choose Morello upenders
90°, 180° or 360°
Tilting angle is chosen for the job: 90° to stand a die up, 180° to turn it over, 360° for full rotation.
Hydraulic or mechanical
Electrohydraulic units with cylinders, or electromechanical units with gear motors and chains. Both give smooth, controlled motion.
No crane flipping
The load turns on the machine, without risky manual maneuvers or overhead lifting, and the crane stays free for other work.
Deck built to the load
Steel, wood, plywood or roller decks. Load locking and centering available on request, as on the 10 t pallet-centering model.
Controls that fit your plant
Pendant panel, remote control, pulpit, or connection to your WMS or ERP. Laser scanners, sensitive bumpers and photoelectric sensors for safety.
Hazardous areas
Ex versions on request for Class 1 and 2, Division 1 and 2, Zone 1 and 2, dust and gas.
Configurations
Upender and tilter configurations
90° die upenders
Stand dies and molds up for inspection, maintenance or storage. Morello has built 40 t die tilters and 80 t upenders for steel mills.
More info
Heavy hydraulic tilters
Large tilting decks driven by hydraulic cylinders for heavy dies and castings, operated from a pendant or remote control.
More info
180° tilters with conveyor
Turn the load over and pass it on: a tilter with a built-in conveyor belt fits into a production or foundry line.
More info
Compact upenders
Smaller electrohydraulic upenders with roller decks for pallets and lighter dies, from about 1 t (2,205 lb).

Carts with tilting function
Transfer carts that move the load and tilt it at the destination, such as a 9 t rail cart for the nuclear industry.

How it works
What an industrial upender does
An upender, or tilter, rotates a heavy load on a powered deck instead of flipping it with a crane. Dies, coils, pallets, castings and semi-finished steel turn in a controlled motion, so no one works under a hanging load.
Morello builds hydraulic upenders driven by cylinders and mechanical upenders driven by electric gear motors and chains. Capacity, deck size, tilting angle and speed are defined with you for each project.

Applications
Where Morello upenders work
Die and mold shops
Turn press dies and injection molds for maintenance, inspection and storage.
Steel mills
Upend coils and semi-finished steel products, up to 80 t on recent Morello projects.
Foundries
Tilt castings and turn parts over inside the production line.
Coil handling
Coil tippers with load cells turn wire and steel coils and weigh them at the same time.
Nuclear industry
Tilt heavy shells and containers, such as a 130 t machine for nuclear waste shells.
Pallets and machinery
Turn pallets and machine parts with centering and locking built into the deck.
Morello Upenders and Tilters: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a hydraulic and a mechanical upender?
A hydraulic upender tilts the deck with hydraulic cylinders fed by an electrohydraulic power unit. A mechanical upender uses electric gear motors and chains. Both give smooth, controlled motion. Morello chooses the drive for each project based on load, tilting angle, speed and plant layout, and Prella helps you compare the options.
How heavy a load can a Morello upender handle?
Morello builds upenders from about 1 t (2,205 lb) to over 200 t (440,900 lb). Recent projects include a 40 t die tilter, 80 t upenders for steel mills and a 130 t machine for tilting nuclear waste shells. Capacity, deck size and speed are defined for your load.
Can an upender replace crane flipping of dies?
Yes, that is its main purpose. The die or mold turns on the machine deck by 90° or 180°, so there is no overhead flipping, no load hanging over people and no damage from uneven lifting. Your crane stays free for other moves while the upender does the turning.
Can an upender be built for hazardous areas?
Yes. Morello offers Ex versions on request for Class 1 and 2, Division 1 and 2, and Zone 1 and 2 areas, for both dust and gas. Tell Prella your area classification, load and tilting angle, and we will check the configuration with Morello and send a quote.
Need to turn dies, coils or castings safely?
Send Prella the load weight, size and tilting angle you need. We quote, deliver, start up and service Morello upenders across North America.
